How to pack a vinyl record (step-by-step)

1) Remove the record from the jacket. Slide the vinyl into a clean inner sleeve and place it outside the outer jacket (both inside a poly bag if you use them). This prevents seam splits caused by transit flex.

2) Add corner & face protection. Place a cardboard sheet (stiffener) on each face of the jacket. This spreads pressure and guards against bends.

3) Wrap for scuff resistance. For valuable or glossy sleeves, add a light layer of bubble wrap or paper to prevent rub marks.

4) Load the mailer snugly. Choose the correct vinyl record mailer size (single LP, multi-LP, or box-set format). A close fit reduces movement and corner crush.

5) Lock and seal. Close the mailer and seal seams with strong packing tape using an H-tape pattern. Press along edges to ensure adhesion.

6) Label clearly. Apply address/handling labels. If you include paperwork, use Documents Enclosed wallets on the outer face.

Why pack records this way?

Stops seam splits

Separating the vinyl from the jacket removes internal pressure that tears spines during impacts.

Prevents edge & corner crush

Stiffeners + snug mailers spread force across a wider area, protecting corners and edges.

Minimises surface rub

Light wrap or sleeves reduce friction so artworks and high-gloss finishes stay mark-free.

Recommended materials to pair with your mailers

Cardboard Sheets

Use as stiffeners (front/back). Cut to fit inside the mailer and keep corners crisp.

Bubble Wrap

One light pass protects glossy jackets and box-set edges—avoid bulky over-wraps.

Packing Tape

H-tape the perimeter to lock lids and edges. Press firmly to seal fibres.

Postal Boxes

For premium shipments or multiple LPs + extras, double-box with a snug postal carton.

Documents Enclosed

Attach invoices/returns externally; keeps paperwork intact and parcels tidy.

Labels

Clear addressing and optional handling notices help reduce mis-sorts and rough handling.

Single LP & 7"/10" records

For single LPs (12"), use a snug single-LP mailer with two stiffeners. Place the disc in a clean inner sleeve outside the jacket to prevent seam splits. For 7" and 10", choose the correct format mailer and avoid oversized packaging that allows sliding.

If shipping an LP with lightweight extras (e.g., lyric sheet), keep inserts flat between stiffeners—not directly against the vinyl.

Gatefolds, doubles & box sets

Gatefolds and double albums need multi-LP mailers plus extra stiffeners. Pack the discs outside the gatefold to reduce internal stress. For box sets, choose reinforced mailers and add cardboard sheets top/bottom; consider outer postal boxes for high-value sets.

If accessories (books, posters) are included, layer them between stiffeners to keep weight even.

Common packing mistakes to avoid

Transit flex drives the disc into the spine, causing seam splits and corner blow-outs. Always pack the vinyl outside the jacket.

Loose space allows sliding and edge damage. Use the correct mailer size and rely on stiffeners over bulky void fill.

Weak seals pop under compression. Use quality tape and H-tape all primary seams.

High-gloss inks scuff easily. A light wrap or interleaf plus stiffeners prevents rub marks.

For collector box sets, add an outer postal box with layer pads for a double-box approach.
